10-20-30 Minutes to Learn Paper Piecing
Do you dream of making quilts but are daunted by all the steps and amount of time involved? Do you have only 10, 20 or 30 minutes at a time to work on a project? Does the thought of meticulous cutting and precision sewing make you avoid piecing quilts? Then paper-piecing is for you! Paper-piecing has been around for generations. Our foremothers would raw stitch lines on newspaper for crazy piecing rough-cut strips of fabric. These pieced foundations would be cut into squares or diamonds and sewn together to make a quilt top. As our grandmothers discovered, piecing on paper has a number of advantages over traditional piecing. First, paper-piecing eliminated the tedious, time-consuming step of accurately cutting facric before piecing. That’s right! Just a quick rough-cut of your fabric pieces to make them a manageable size and you are ready to move on to sewing! Second, there is no guessing or agonizing over a perfect 1/4” seam allowance. You just need to be able to sew on a straight line. (Not “in” but “on”—the stitching lines are right there on your foundation paper!) Third, once you have completed piecing your blocks, the paper remains, providing you with stitching lines for precise piecing when sewing your blocks together. And the end result? Even beginners can make a block that included such tiny details as shutters and 1/8” wide trim around the windows of a house—all perfectly pieced and perfectly painless in just 30 minutes or less!
